Does my website need to comply with the European Accessibility Act?

Since 28 June 2025, businesses selling to EU consumers must meet WCAG 2.1 AA, including most webshops and consumer-facing services. Very small businesses (under 10 employees and under EUR 2M turnover) may be exempt from some service requirements.

What does an automated accessibility scan catch?

Automated testing reliably detects an estimated 30-50% of accessibility issues - the most common, high-volume problems. A clean scan is not a guarantee of full compliance; a manual review is still recommended.

The European Accessibility Act applies to any business serving customers in the EU, wherever you're based: online shops, booking and banking services, and most consumer-facing sites. Each EU country sets its own penalties and names its own enforcement body: fines reach up to €100,000 per violation in some markets, with six-figure penalties on the books across several others. National authorities began market surveillance in 2025, and any customer or disability organisation can file a complaint that triggers a review.

Fixing accessibility issues before a complaint or a regulator's deadline is far cheaper than an emergency fix under pressure. An accessible site also reaches more customers and ranks better, well beyond the fines it avoids.

Note: businesses under 10 employees and €2M turnover may be exempt from the EAA's service requirements. Most growing webshops clear both thresholds, and accessibility wins customers either way. This page is general information.
